दिल्ली में सोमवार को आंधी तूफान के चलते सवा सौ पेड़ जड़ से उखड़ गए जिस कारण दिल्ली की कई जगहों पर भारी जाम लग गया था। दिल्ली के टैफिक पुलिस डीसीपी आलोक पटेल ने कहा है कि ‘करीब सवा सौ पेड़ जड़ से उखड़ कर गिर गए. कल से केजी मार्ग बंद है. दिल्ली में कुछ सड़कों का एक ही रास्ता चल रहा है. अब धीरे-धीरे रास्ते खुल रहे हैं. पेड़, मलबा और पोल रास्तों से हटवाए गए हैं. अब भी लोग काम में जुटे हैं’।
इसके अलावा दिल्ली के प्रह्लादपुर अंडरपास में बारिश से जलजमाव इतना हो गया कि यहां डूबने से एक शख्स की मौत भी हो गई। इस तूफान में तीन लोगों ने अपनी जान गंवाई हैं।
बता दें कि इस आंधी तूफान के चलते दिल्ली की ऐतिहासिक इमारत जामा मस़्जिद पर भारी नुकसान को मिला हैं। तेज आंधी की वजह से जामा मस्जिद के तीन गुंबदों में सबसे बड़े बीच वाले गुंबद के ऊपर लगे पीतल की धातु, जो खुद एक गुंबद की तरह दिखता है, टूट कर नीचे गिर गया है। इसके अलावा और कई ईमारतों पर नुकसान देखने को मिला हैं।
मौसम विभाग के अधिकारी ने बताया है कि दिल्ली में 2018 के बाद से सोमवार को पहली बार इतना ‘‘भीषण” तूफान आया।
Strong tremors of earthquake felt in Kathmandu, magnitude 4.7

Earthquake tremors were felt in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu today. A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Kathmandu in the early hours of Saturday. Due to which many people lost their sleep and they were forced to run out of the house. The tremors of the earthquake in Kathmandu were recorded by the National Seismological Center at 2:36 pm. Its center was in Bhaktapur district, 15 km east of the capital city.
The earthquake was felt in and around Kathmandu Valley. However, there was no report of loss of life or property immediately after the incident. Many people have written on social media that the tremors of this earthquake reminded them of the devastating 2015 earthquake.
Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam shaken by earthquake tremors
At the same time, earthquake tremors were also felt in Pahalgam of Jammu and Kashmir. The magnitude of the earthquake was 3.7 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred after midnight at 12:37. Panic spread in Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir due to sudden earthquake. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) gave information about the earthquake by tweeting. He said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 3.7, which was recorded at 12:37 minutes and 48 seconds late in the night. The center of which was 5 km away from the city.
India comes last in the Global Environmental Performance Index 2022
Ranks at 180 in the EPI Index. Centre opposes the Rankings, calls it ‘unscientific’ & ‘Biased’

On June 8, 2022 came the report of Global Environment Performance Index published by the Yale Centre for Environment Law & Policy in association with International Earth science Information Network, Columbia University & World Economic Forum. The report consisted of assessment on 180 global nations on the basis of 40 indicators. But what came as a shock was the Performing Score of India at 18.9 which makes India the lowest in the rank. What comes as a big blow is that the peer countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan & Vietnam have fared above India in the rank.
It is worth noting that the EPI calculation variables majorly comprises Air Quality Index, Biodiversity, Energy policies, Water Resources, Agriculture and Forest cover. On the contrary, it was Denmark who secured the first position in the index. In the preceding 2020 EPI index, India’s rank was 168/180 which ultimately shows the major drop making India the world’s least sustainable country.
In response to the EPI Index , the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change ( MOEFC ) issued a statement calling out the EPI score to be unscientific and biased in its methodology. The Environment Ministry rebutted that the indicators like forests- wetlands, energy efficiency, soil health, Agro Biodiversity & food loss/waste in which India was faring well in recent time were not taken into consideration in the report. Not just the government but several Environmentalists questioned the credibility of the report as just a few months back, India secured 10th Rank in the Climate Change Performance Index by CAN International and German Watch. One of the renowned Environmentalists and the CEO of IForest, Mr. Chandra Bhushan took a dig at EPI team. Here’s what he said.
What makes the report looks unsuitable to the Centre is the latter’s stance over the Environmental policies. Over the span of 8 years, the think tanks and the MOEF&CC under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi have launched the AMRUT Mission ( for clean cities ), Namami Gange ( river clean-up programme ) , Soil health card in collaboration with ‘Save Soil’ initiative, International Solar Alliance ( to promote resilience of infrastructure systems to climate & disaster ), India Cooling action plan (ICAP ), LiFE Global Movement (for sustainable development & eco friendly lifestyle ) , Eco- Development Force scheme ( for ecological restoration ), Swachh Bharat and much more.
Even the central government achieved the COP21 target of 40% of electricity consumption from non-fossil energy sources , a record 9 years earlier than 2030. And the recent commitment of Net Zero Carbon emission by 2070 at the COP 26 conference at Glasgow, England all indicates the sign of betterment in the field of Environment which ironically shouldn’t make India suffer a big blow in terms of EPI rank.
But then the question arises on the moral grounds and the factors fulfilment which either of the two ( EPI or MOEF&CC) seems to be disenchanted in case the research & implementation contradicts. Only time will tell the achievements of the Environmental Ministry’s policies with respect to the hypothesis of the EPI 2022 report. For now, the conversation between the World Economic Forum & ruling GOI doesn’t seem to be on the same page.
The Koli’s stare at yet another crisis with their pleas refused in the coastal road project

Recently on instagram we’ve been seeing the hashtag ‘#saveourcoastmumbai’ being used by many Mumbaikars. The Coastal Road sea link has been a work in progress. We see it when we pass Haji Ali, one of Mumbais biodiversity enriched shores now under concrete. What was a visual treat earlier has now become an eyesore. Bay, rocky shorelines and the habitat of sea organisms waters are now concrete war fields of machines and workers.
In march Maharastras CM Uddhav Thackeray had released Mumbai’s climate action plan [MCAP] which aimed at net zero by 2050 and Indias net zero target is by 2070. However Mumbai’s Coastal Road Project stood at odds since it promotes air pollution with more vehicles on the road and has been known for threatening fishermans lives. An IPCC report also brought to light on how this project was an example of maladaptive infrastructure and could have unintended long term consequences. A highlight was given to the ‘adaptation gap’ between what is needed to be done to protect the most vulnerable communities from the impact of climate change and what is being done or planned.
The Haji Ali group is one of the smallest communities among the Kolis. But they will be among the most affected by the 22-km-long coastal road that is coming up at rapid speed. These fisherfolk filed a petition in the Bombay high court in November 2020, against the land reclamation.The report also suggested that routine monitoring of the sandy beaches and shoreline should be carried out before, during and after the project, to get a comparative picture of the change in the shoreline. The fishermen are threatened. They are expected to keep their boats anchored in the sea and often the anchors have been cut off. Their business is also hampered because of the noise and vibrations of the reclamation that has disturbed the fish because of which they find nothing at the end of the day except some small fish.
The BMC had originally said that since the coastal road would be only on stilts in these parts, fishing activity would not be disturbed. But now they are reclaiming a lot of land and the Lotus Jetty has become inoperable. The assessment, carried out by coastal geomorphologist Sudhakar Thakurdesai at the behest of the Worli Koliwada Nakhava Matsyavyavsay Sahakari Society (WKNMSS), states that the fishers require at least 160 metres under the interchange to ensure safe passage for boats venturing out to the open sea from Cleveland Bunder, a centuries-old artisan fishing port in Worli. In its current design specifications, the BMC has proposed a 60 metres span.
Recently the BMC refused to include the suggestion for design modifications in the project made by fisherfolk and urban architects. This project has been given the highest priority in Mumbai with a provision of 1300 cr, even more than the health budget in mind. Mumbai has made progress on infrastructural interventions but not enough on eco system based solutions and community maintenance.
